One can regard this from the standpoint that the family has its origins in both the immigrant and the indigenous population - thus strengthening the link between the family and the land - or from the perspective that the existence of Cherokee blood in the family line actually denies the validity of the white lines heritage. We are given an insight into this during Stars fevered monologue, when from the confused and wandering strands of her delusion, we can focus on the thread where she changes her feelings towards the child she bears. At first, she was overwhelmed with anger and resentment, since she had been effectively given as property to Rowen, and the resulting pregnancy was not of her choosing. She sees the child as something alien, a parasite within her, until she realises that whatever its paternity, the child is first and foremost hers. In a patriarchal society where it is the fathers line of inheritance which is considered important, this is a considerable cultural leap: the concept that whatever an individuals paternity, their "real" heritage comes from the mother, is not one which is common in most European cultures. In effect, Star is dismissing the foreign aspect of her childs bloodline and focusing only on what she considers important, the Cherokee part of the heritage.
