a novel that speaks multitudes about the disgusting and unhealthy conditions of the factories and as such it was a novel that gained the attention of the government and resulted
in many regulations and laws considering the sterile and healthy conditions of meat factories. However, this was not the original intention of Sinclair when he wrote the novel. He noted
that while he essentially attempted to touch the hearts and souls and intellect of individuals, regarding socialism and the workers conditions, he really only succeeded in touching the readers stomachs
(Cohen). Bearing in mind that Sinclairs intentions were not the reform actually achieved the following paper examines the problems that Sinclair was criticizing and his proposed solution. The
Jungle by Upton Sinclair: Reform Sinclair went to great lengths to present to the reader the horrid and unjust conditions of the workers in the United States. He offered up
sympathetic struggling characters who seemed to find nothing but oppression, hunger, poverty, and illness no matter how hard they worked or tried to better themselves. It is a story about
labor unions and the futility of struggling in such a world that is ultimately controlled by big business. As an example of the
nature of the work, at one point in the novel the narrator states how, "That blizzard knocked many a man out, for the crowd outside begging for work was never
greater, and the packers would not wait long for any one" (Sinclair). This struggle to find work, to keep work, and to feed ones family was never ending in the
novel. And, in the next line one can see the heart and soul of the primary character in the story, Jurgis: "When it was over, the soul of Jurgis was
