Chicago around the turn of the 20th century. It is a story of human survival, struggle, death, despair, and ultimate spirit that is more often than not destroyed by the
horrid conditions of life that can exist. Interestingly enough, Sinclairs objective in living with such people and then writing a novel about such conditions and lives was to point out
the major flaws in a capitalistic society. However, what he succeeded in doing was bringing the food industry to the eye of the government and laws changed because of this
book as they related to meat packing plants and the quality of food products. The following paper analyzes Sinclairs focus on the dangers and horrid realities of capitalism and presents
personal reactions and opinions concerning the novel. The Jungle As mentioned, Sinclairs book is about the negative realities of capitalism. Unfortunately his work caused a great reaction regarding
the sanitary conditions of meat packing plants. Those who read the book were not concerned with the devastating realities of capitalism, only concerned with the horrific scenes and how they
affected them in real life. Sinclairs novel is one that begins with a sense of hope, but it is also a hope tinged with harsh realities. In these we
will find the hope that America said it could offer, but also the realities that make a capitalistic society oppressive and degrading for many. The novel opens at a wedding
which is clearly one of the most grand experiences most of these people will experience. It is a wedding that incites hope in the people for a better future, but
