It described, in stomach-churning detail, the way in which the meatpacking industry really operated, and its so vivid its a wonder anyone ever ate again. This paper discusses the novel,
what its protagonists hope to find in America, and some of the worst aspects of the "system" that ultimately takes everything away from them. Discussion Jurgis, Ona and the rest
have come to America from the region of Poland and Lithuania in search of what is usually called the "American dream." In America they can be free, not constrained by
social class, money or other problem The worst aspects of the book are the grinding poverty that drags everyone down, and Jurgiss loss of Ona. They are very much in
love but when Ona catches the eye of Connor, the boss, she has no choice but to submit to him. Connor is taking advantage of two things here: the fact
that Jurgis and Ona are so poor that she will do anything to keep her job; and the fact that he is the boss. In the world that Sinclair creates
in the pages of his book, men like Connor are able to get away with their filthy plans because their victims need their jobs so desperately they will not report
them. Connor is despicable; if this were present day, Ona would have him up on charges of sexual harassment. But it is not present day and so he is able
to use her as he pleases. We might take a moment to note that critics call The Jungle a flawed novel, and indeed there seems to be no letup from
the relentless horrors that the protagonists face. Disgrace, uncertainty and grinding poverty the likes of which its hard to imagine are all key ingredients in the book, and it soon
