This 28 page paper chronicles the JonBenet Ramsey murder case beginning with an overview of the case, including comments about the media frenzy and an outline of the mistakes the police made. The brutal murder of this 6-year old girl shocked America and seared its way in the nations consciousness (Maloney and OConnor, 2003). Daughter of very successful and wealthy parents in Boulder, Colorado, JonBenet was a beautiful and talented child, a Child Pageant star (Lesser and Fix, 2005). John found the body of his daughter in a room in the basement of their home on December 26, six hours after Patsy, the mother, reported the child missing and having found a ransom note (CNN.com, 1997). The girls mouth was taped with duct tape, her hands were tied behind her back and she had been strangled, actually garroted (CNN.com, 1997). The killer apparently used the handle of one of Patsys paintbrushes for the noose (Lesser and Fix, 2005). The father removed the tape from her mouth and carried her upstairs to the living room (CNN.com, 1997). The police would later move the body the base of the Christmas tree (Lesser and Fix, 2005). A media frenzy ensued. JonBenets picture was flashed probably millions of times in all media venues, radio, magazines, newspapers, television newsmagazines, TV morning shows, evening shows, even Larry King and Geraldo aired shows on this case (The Editor, 2001). As the Editor of The World & I put it: ". . . dwelled on the case, endlessly recounting the lurid, titillating, and bizarre details: the viciousness of the murder, which included a skull fracture, strangulation, and suspected rape . . ." (2001, p. 66). That same editor said: "In 1996, some 2,000 children were murdered across the United States, but JonBenet, because of the unique circumstances surrounding her case, was propelled into celebrity status" (The Editor, 2001, p. 66).
