writing on this subject has to wonder whether or not the certification is truly valuable. Yes, it does to an extent assure that there is a standard of care, but
with so much variation in respect to the quality of care at hospitals around the nation, is certification flawed? In examining the history of The Joint Commission, what it
does, and how often it reevaluates its methodology, it does appear that the organization does its best to assure that minimum standards are met and that there is a sense
of quality at every level. Of course, there will be variance between organizations and this is true of any industry, but at least most people can rest assured that American
hospitals are safe. History of The Joint Commission The Joint Commission had its start at the turn of the twentieth century. In fact, it was one
century ago in 1910 that Dr. Ernest Codman decided that the there should be a system of hospital standardization ("The Joint Commission," 2010). It was an idea that makes sense.
This way, people who entered any hospital would be certain that they were getting good care. The system devised by Codman would track each and every patient after hospital release
