A 15 page research paper that gives a detailed account of the conflict that erupted in Johnson County, Wyoming in 1892 between big cattle ranchers and settlers and farmers who only had small herds. The big ranchers claimed that they were wiping out rustlers and thieves that were trying to steal them blind. The ordinary people of Johnson County felt the powerful ranchers were trying to exterminate them and drive them from their homes. The writer, citing numerous primary sources, argues that it was a case where 'the few who had' were determined to keep it and the 'many who wanted their share' were determined to persevere till they got it. Bibliography lists 18 sources.

a morning bucket of water. The second man managed to drag his companions body back inside the cabin and he held off his assailants until they set fire to the house that afternoon. When the second man was forced to flee from the house because of the flames, the besiegers fired at least a dozen bullets into his body and the Johnson County War was underway (Smith xi). A reporter, Sam Clover, from the Chicago Herald was there to record the spectacle in the extravagant prose that was typical of journalism at that time. Cover reported that "Nate Champion, the king of the cattle thieves and the bravest man in Johnson County was dead" (Smith xi). From Clovers account, one would surmise that this was just another "shoot-em-up" episode typical of the West?a place where men take the law into their own hands and have to be put down for the welfare of society. However, as Smith points out, this scenario was hardly applicable for this particular case (xi). For one thing, in its second year of statehood, Wyoming was no longer a frontier (Smith xi). In the second place, the men behind the armed vigilante group were men of education, wealth and prominence. Two of the leaders were Harvard graduates, five participants in the incident were livestock detectives being paid by cattlemen, two were under indictment in Wyoming (one for assault and the other for murder) and twenty-five members of this armed group were young professional gunmen brought in from Texas (Smith xii). The leaders of this endeavor thought of themselves as righteous men erasing a gang of thieves. The populace of Wyoming saw it differently. A wave of fury swept through Johnson County that caused the invaders to be besieged, in turn, less then thirty ...
