at this sculpture, it appears enormous. One is reminded of the majesty of the mountains or the Grand Canyon in terms of the feeling it elicits. The fact that it
is literally larger than life says something about the subject matter. In absorbing the message that the artist is perhaps meaning to send, it pays to explore Joan of Arc
as the human being who inspired this creation. Most have heard of Joan of Arc. She is a historical character who is discussed much, and was very young at her
death. Joan of Arc was born in France in 1411 and burned at the stake at the age of twenty ("Joan of Arc Memorial," 2007). She was charged with witchcraft
and this female martyr has been embraced by various artists and authors through the ages ("Joan of Arc," 2007). The work was dedicated by the Joan of Arc Statue Committee
in 1915 ("Joan of Arc Memorial," 2007). First, it pays to look at the properties of the work. The statue is made of Bronze and Mohegan granite ("Joan of
Arc Memorial," 2007). This perhaps provides the sculpture with a sense of weight. The object feels heavy when viewing it, and in part, this is attributable to the color.
Unlike white statues that appear light, the darkness and boldness of the material choice does lend itself to be interpreted as heavy. One might agree that this is a good
