the Civil War, we rarely, if ever, imagine the condition and experience of the Jewish citizen. However, they were a very influential part of the nation in its early years.
The following paper presents a historical examination of the Jewish community in Pennsylvania from Colonial times to the time of the Civil War. Jews in Pennsylvania "The history
of Jews in the Americas dates back to Christopher Columbus, who left Spain to cross the Atlantic Ocean on the same day by which Spanish Jews were forced to either
abandon their religion or leave the country. There were at least seven Jews, crypto-Jews (Marranos), or converted Jews who sailed with Columbus in 1492, including Roderigo De Triana, who was
the first to sight land (Columbus later assumed credit for this), Maestre Bernal, who served as the expeditions physician, and Luis De Torres, the interpreter, who spoke Hebrew and Arabic,
which it was believed would be useful in the Orient" (History of the Jews in the United States (Colonial Era-1906)). In relationship to North America we see that their
presence "dates back to the fall of the Dutch colony of Recife in Brazil to the Portuguese on January 26, 1654. The Jewish community had benefited immensely from the liberal
religious attitudes of the Dutch authorities, and approximately 1,500 Jews may have constituted as much as 50 percent of the Dutch colonys civilian population. Fearful of the imposition of the
Inquisition under the Portuguese, a group of 23 Jews sailed north to the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam, expecting to receive the same level of toleration there" (History of the
