which subtly, yet powerfully, added to the horrors he would create. He often used dark and gothic settings for his work, presenting us with subconscious reflections of a people and
a place. For example, in "The Cask of Amontillado" we are offered an Italian setting that is dark and mysterious. And, while we do not understand the impact, consciously, of
this setting, subconsciously we associate Italy with refinement, mystery, and bloody secrets. Poe understood the history and the impact of Italy as it relates to our conscious as well as
subconscious, and played on that in using it as a backdrop for "The Cask of Amontillado." In the following paper we examine Poes use of Italy in this short story
and illustrate how the darkness inherent in historical Italy provides the perfect setting for one of his most famous dark tales. Why Italy? In our first examination of
the story we are pulled in by the men who are obviously refined and intrigued by wine. Italy is known for wine, and this offers us the foundation for the
story as it unfolds. We, perhaps subconsciously, associate Italians with a sense of pretension as it involves wine, and the knowledge of wine. We know that even people today pride
themselves, perhaps unnecessarily, on their knowledge of wines. This offers us a very powerful and self righteous look at these two men who are obviously at odds in their pursuit
of superb wine. Now, while we may have gained a similar understanding if the characters were from any other place, the power of the competition between the two is
