Despite this high-sounding ideal, the "blessings of liberty" were not available for people of African descent living in the Southern colonies. Although the Constitution reflected the political realities of 1787-1788,
even at that time, there were still individuals who were shocked that the country would be founded on the principles of liberty and still tolerate the institution of slavery.
Williams Lloyd Garrison, a noted abolitionist, publicly burned the Constitution when he found out that the document protected slavery (Graber 271). Nevertheless, the
Constitution did provide certain protections for the institution of slavery. To understand why these provisions were included, it is necessary to first comprehend the political situation at that time and
the steps that were necessary for the Constitution to be ratified. Why slavery was not outlawed by the Constitution After the Revolutionary War had been won, the survival of
the United States as a nation was still far from certain. At the time that the Constitution was formulated, the Tories in Great Britain were predicting the collapse of the
US (Rutland PG), and it was clear that the Articles of Confederation were insufficient to bind the new nation together as a whole.
