Each of these clients have basic human rights which must be acknowledged if beneficial changes can be enacted. These rights include the right to service. Clients also have the right to be involved, or involve significant others, in their case assessment and planning for resolution. They have the right to control their own private property. They also have the right to privacy in regard to their personal information. The author utilizes a case worker’s interaction with a fictional family to illustrate these rights. The social worker is charged with a myriad of responsibilities. Among these is the protection of the rights of the service user. The
issue of service user rights in this setting encompass the basic human rights to which all individuals are entitled such as the right to freedom from verbal, sexual and physical
abuse. The social work setting, however, introduces a number of different considerations regarding the basic rights to which a service user is entitled. Obviously, service users have the
right to service. They also have the right to be involved, or involve significant others, in their case assessment and planning for resolution. They have the right to
control their own private property. They also have the right to privacy in regard to their personal information. Service user rights and
the manner in which we regard those rights are tied to our own professional and personal codes of ethics. Stahl (1996) provides the business definition of ethics as was
provided by Richard DeGeorge in his 1993 publication "Business Ethics": "systematic attempt to make sense of our individual and social moral experience, in such a way as to determine
the rules that ought to govern human conduct, the values worth pursuing and the character traits deserving development in life" (DeGeorge, 1993, 19).
Given the considerations presented above, the primary task of the social worker (the task of selecting and defining goals for the destitute
and essentially hopeless social work client for example) can be a difficult and complex task. Goals are set according to the desired outcome and function (Cormier and Cormier, 1991).
