really does speak for anyone who feels as though he (or she) simply cannot make his voice heard in society. This paper examines the journey of the unnamed narrator
and asks whether he has grown from his experiences; reflects only moderate growth; or has developed into a sophisticated and discerning individual. Discussion The narrator of The Invisible Man
goes through many experiences, some of them comic, come of them horrifying, some infuriating and some deeply saddening, such that his life really does become a journey toward some sort
of understanding. At least he has the awareness that he is on a journey, something most of us lack. But does he change and grow, and if so,
how much? Thats a difficult question. The book is loosely divided into three sections: the South, the North, and Harlem, each of which represents a stage on his
life journey. If we look very briefly at some of the events in each section, we can then draw a conclusion about his personal growth. On the first page
of the book the narrator tells us of his dilemma: "I was looking for myself, and asking everyone except myself questions which I, and only I, could answer" (Ellison,
1994, p. 15). That really is his biggest problem: he is seeking answers to the problem of being black in America, but hes looking for meaning in things
outside himself, when he has to find answers within. Thats never easy. The ugly episode that begins the book shows us clearly the world into which the narrator has
