things. An interview is a discussion with an individual, where questions are asked. However, an interview takes place when no accusations are present (Inbau, 2004). On some level, the interview
is a fishing expedition as sometimes, the police do not even know what they are looking for when they find a person of interest. On the other hand, sometimes an
interview is held to find out specific facts because officials know that the individual witnessed a crime of some sort. Yet, the interviewee is not under suspicion, or even if
they are, they are not under arrest. The purpose of the interview is merely to gather information (Inbau, 2004). The interview may be held early in an investigation (Inbau,
2004). At this stage, there may not even be a theory as to why a crime was committed, for example, but the police will talk to anyone who may contribute
valid information to help them resolve a case. If a crime is committed, the police will knock on doors in the neighborhood to interview residents. Are discussions held on location
still considered interviews? The answer is yes. While the ideal environment is in an interview room, many officers will conduct interviews in a number of environments (Inbau, 2004). Interviews are
generally unstructured (Inbau, 2004). The officers ask off the cuff questions using their intuition or framing the next question based on a previous answer. By contrast, the interrogation is
accusatory (Inbau, 2004). An interrogation has a purpose unlike an interview where the officers are looking for answers or clues to a puzzle. The purpose of interrogation is to learn
