research, both as support for internal claims and to provide some framework for the dissertations own experimental processes. The results of this experimental process are then published or otherwise made
available and ostensibly contribute to the ongoing disciplinary discourse such that future researchers will be able to incorporate those findings into their own experiments. Generally, research and experimentations proceed from
a specific theoretical framework that lends credence and structure to the experimental design. This means that in order to effectively contribute to discourse, research must contribute first to theory. Unfortunately,
there is often a great deal of confusion about what "theory" is. In order to conduct effective research, then, it is necessary to carry out three key agendas: the exploration
of different conceptions of theory, the exploration of the relationship between theory and research, and finally the actual application of theory to a particular topic of research. Discussing
the Nature and Types of Theory This paragraph helps the student begin to explore the various views of theory. A number of scholars have written extensively on the topic
of theory, as a broad concept, and developed a number of competing viewpoints. It is unlikely, of course, that any one of these concepts represents a total image of the
truth of theory. Rather, a synthetic view of theory developed from exploring a wide range of conceptual views is likely to be of greater value to the research. Nevertheless, one
must begin by observing the disparate individuals conceptual viewpoints. One of the most basic and fundamental concepts of theory is that theory exists as "a statement of the suspected relationship
between and among variables" (Gelso, 2006). For instance, one might look at a popularly known and common theory such as the "theory of evolution" in this light: the theory of
