Some argue that the Constitution is not appropriate today as while it was intended to be appropriate, the founders never would have expected the significant changes society has encountered over time. For example, today there is argument over the rights for gay people to marry. Other changes noted by a student include the ideas related to human cloning, reproductive rights and the Internet. These changes have prompted court cases and sometimes it seems there are rulings made in line with the Constitution, but the issues themselves continue to be questioned. A prompt submitted by a student suggests that Alexander Hamilton believed that the constitution should always be the same, but that Thomas Jefferson believed that it is a document that should be rewritten every few years. The Constitution in fact was conceived one way during the 1700s, but through the years it has been reinterpreted in a variety of ways. Still, a question begs an answer, which is, has the Constitution really radically changed since it was first created? In answering that question it is important to note that the compromise of sorts is that the Constitution both can and cannot change. That is, it was never a document that was revised every so often, but if the people wanted a change due to the changing times, it is not prohibited. Tocqueville explains: "The American Constitution is not considered immutable, as in France; it cannot be changed by ordinary authorities of society as in England. It is a thing apart. It represents the will of the whole people and binds the legislators as well as plain citizens, but it can be changed by the will of the people, in accordance with established forms in anticipated eventualities" (101).
