Use of the Internet in increasing productivity is not limited only to large businesses, either. Web sites whose sole purpose is to sell product, and for good reason. Global electronic commerce revenues are estimated to exceed $150 billion by the year 2000 within the
United States alone (IBM, 1/8/97). The global market forecast for Internet commerce estimates that the number of people who shop over the Internet will grow from 3.8 million to
45.6 million by the end of 2000 (IBM, 11/19/96). Commerce on the Internet means less dependency on stock levels, fewer disappointed customers and, since payments are made securely online,
more effortless settlements. In the past, transaction security (or lack of it) had been an issue and had prevented many would-be purchasers from participating in online shopping. During the
summer of 1996, however, a joint pilot program between MasterCard and IBM helped establish the Secure Electronic Transaction (SET). Using increasing levels of security encryption, SET standards virtually eliminate
any opportunity for third-party credit card fraud. Shoppers can be assured of the security of their transactions; vendors can be reasonably assured that the purchaser is indeed the holder
of the card. As powerful as both realized and potential sales increases are, business use of the Internet is not limited only to the marketing and sales of products and
services. An increasing number of businesses are using the universal nature of the Internet to enhance communications between satellite offices and to stay in touch with outside sales people.
