The new ways of doing business and the proliferation of information are only some of the benefits of the internet. Other include increased scope, scale and speed of communication, empowerment
of internet users and increased choice. However we perceive the internet there can be little doubt that this has been the trigger and also the result of a "technological revolution".
From the time the internet was first perceived the technological revolution was inevitable. The on issue was how it would happen and what
speed. However, unlike the general perception this was not a rapid revolution, the foundations were back in the 1960s. The start if
the revolution began not as a planned event, but as a natural development resulting from the progress of technological development. The internet started as a United States Government defence project
in 1969 by the name of ARPANET (Maitra, 1982). When first becoming operational this was aimed at communication between government departments and academics (Newsweek, 1999). On its own this innovation
would not have been sufficient to be the precursor to electronic commerce and the technological revolution. The trigger was when, about four years later, software for personal computers became available.
This software heralded the entrance of Bill Gates to the technological world, as he was a co-author of this programme (Newsweek, 1999). This is the beginning of Microsoft and shows
the how the company has gained the current leader position with this very early involvement. The next step was by the National Science Foundation (NSF) another United States Federal
agency, in the late 1980s, they brought together networking using the technology developed as a result of ARPANET (Maitra, 1982). E-commerce is a major aspect of the internet,
