society. In David N. Greenfields Virtual Addiction (Chapter 2: The Nature of Addiction), and Clifford Stolls Isolated by the Internet the reader sees various perspectives which speak of addictions and
problems associated with the Internet as discovered through research and study. The following paper compares and contrasts the two works. The Internet As noted in the introduction, many
people have argued that the Internet is a wondrous place. They argue as such in light of the fact that people who are homebound for a variety of reasons have
access to the world and other people. Individuals can connect with other people all around the world on various levels. For example, someone suffering from a rare disease will likely
be able to find a support group on the Internet where they can find they are not alone in their problems. Or a person who is homebound can establish a
business online and thus become a part of the world without having to leave home. But, on the other hand there are many people who immerse themselves in the Internet
in ways that are harmful. They may cheat on a spouse, spend so much time online in chat rooms or gaming sites that they neglect their family and friends. The
predominant focus of Greenfields and Stolls is the negative consequences of the Internet. Both authors examine how dangerous the Internet can be. For example, Greenfield introduces the chapter by
discussing a woman whose life was all but ruined by the Internet: "Her screen name is Hot as Fire. She is HIV and Hepatitis B positive and she works as
