The position the United States holds in the world has changed considerably since our earliest history. From an international
perspective this position has made particularly dramatic changes in the past one hundred years. The factors influencing and influenced by these changes include economic factors as well as the
social and cultural differences which exist not only between us and other countries but which also exist within the U.S. itself. By far the most important factor, however, has
been our military strength, a strength which has been used time and time again to insure the perpetuation of democracy and capitalism. Today
the U.S. stands as the foremost world power. This status is really not that surprising. Indeed, practically since the beginning of our history as a nation at least
some individuals have viewed our role as one which is related to the health and well-being of the world as a whole. Our strong sense of self, our sense
of nationalism, took shape at a very early point in our history indeed and it would be this sense of nationalism which would shape our interactions with others.
In the earliest times of our history our independent spirit was deeply ingrained. We fought only to preserve our own freedom or
liberty. Even the American Revolution itself was fought to preserve the independence the colonial entities had come to expect since their migration to the Americas. Over the next
two centuries of our existence, however, we would come to see ourselves more and more as the insurer of liberty, as a policing agent, for the world as a whole.
