Published in England in 1789 and in the United States in 1791, The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudab Equiano bears the distinction of being the first
work by a former slave to have been written entirely by the author. Olaudah Equiano was a boy prince of high standing in his community when he and his
sister were abducted from their home. He was kidnapped by a rival tribe for the purpose of being sold to the Europeans harvesting future slaves from the shores of
Africa. He took part in the slave trade as a slave, and gave reign to his entrepreneurial spirit. He was able to
buy his freedom with his own earnings. Equiano illustrated to European and American readers the civilization of his people and the barbarism of the white slave traders, upending the
common notion of who was "civilized" and who was not. Equianos Purpose Equiano presents his autobiography in his book, but its overriding message
is that of the need for freedom for all people. Equiano describes the scene of his abduction from his home. The adults were working in the fields -
illustrating that Equianos people did not indulge in child labor - when two men and a woman came over their walls. Equiano and his sister, too young to work
in the fields, clearly were old enough to take on responsibility for the home but not strong enough to escape their kidnappers. Equiano notes their despair in saying that
after a while, the kidnappers "untied us and offered us food, but we couldnt eat, we were so choked with tiredness and grief. Finally sleep came. For a little while
