It is seen in the ethnic world, but it is also seen within marriages, between nations, at football games and as a form of sibling rivalry. Further, violence takes different
forms. Today in society, there is the idea that every slap or spanking is an abuse. Yet, sometimes, allowing one to blow off steam through wrestling with a sibling--as boys
often do--is not all that negative. Still, violence is generally viewed as a negative thing and is not tolerated in most societies. Societies have their own rituals and models that
help one to see what is acceptable and what is not. In a compilation called Violence and Politics, Roger MacGinty writes a chapter called Ethno-national Conflicts, Democratization and Hate Crime
(Worcester, Bermanzohn, Ungar & Bermazhon, 2001). To some extent, it helps to explain the problems that exist within certain communities. The introduction to that book also includes similar themes. In
the same work, Tilly writes a chapter called Violent and Nonviolent Trajectories in Contentious Politics (2001). All authors address the problem of violence in society and how ethnic conflicts arise.
Today, ethnic conflicts and in particular ethnic cleansing is a part of the real world. Although conflicts arise between nations, it is more often than not attributable to ethnic differences.
The concept of ethnic cleansing is of course unthinkable, particularly a half century after the Holocaust that was supposed to put an end to such horrendous actions. The Holocaust was
