(2001), the EU really had its roots in the decisions which were made at the end of World War II, however did not officially come into existence until November
1993 after the ratification of the Maastricht Treaty Original members were Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and West Germany. Denmark, Ireland
and the United Kingdom joined in 1973. Greece became a member in 1981, and Portugal and Spain joined in 1986. Austria, Finland, and Sweden became members on January 1, 1995.
Perceived goals of the organization at that time were the development of a singular currency and the dissolution of border regulations concerning transport of goods. Supranational By definition, "supranational"
applies to those issues, which would transcend national boundaries, authorities, or interests. In the larger picture we could say that the European Union is an acknowledgment or recognition,
that there are some issues, which would transcend national boundaries. This is quite a step for those countries, which historically have warred with one another, and beat the drum
