When a criminal lawyer takes a case, he or she goes through a variety of approaches to create a defense. One type of defense is justification, and the
controversial insanity defense is one method of justifying an act. The general principles of the theory of justification is that although a heinous act may have been committed, the
act is justifiable under the law. In other words, someone will have a good defense if they shoot a burglar who poses a threat to them. There is an excuse
or justification for such a shooting and that justification is reasonable. There are many other instances in which harming is justifiable. Police officers find that in a lethal fight they
must defend their actions. If an officers life is in danger, or there is a legitimate perception of such, then the officer is certainly justified in pulling the trigger. Of
course, even self-defense is sometimes hard to prove. However, a more difficult way to prove justification is with the use of the insanity defense.
The insanity defense has always been controversial. Many people object to the fact that criminals can "get off" if they plead insanity. Of course, if they do avoid a
criminal sentence, they are often locked up in an institution for a very long period. While it is hard for defense attorneys to prove that their clients might have been
insane at the time of a particular incident when the individual appears normal in court, this defense has been used successfully. Sometimes the defense is temporary insanity where the defendant
is not insane, but was at the time of the crime. It is of course easier to use the defense of insanity if the defendant is simply insane all of
