THE TRAVELS OF MAGELLAN The Medieval period was a time of great discoveries and there were many voyagers exploring unknown lands and waters, coming back with stories of discoveries and tales of wealth. One of these stories that came back was of a secret strait that went through South America so that one could cut short the sailing time instead of sailing entirely around the continent of South America. One of the men most impressed with this information and who intended to prove it to be true was Ferdinand Magellan. Ferdinand Magellan believed that he could sail around the world and tried hard to impress this information upon people who would fund this exploration for him. He wished to locate a passageway through South America that would cut short the voyage that took many sailors to the Moluccas, also known as the Spice Islands. Because of Magellans fame at the Portuguese Court and his intensity in wanting to make this important voyage, it wasnt long before the King of Portugal became jealous. It did not take Magellan long to go to King Charles of Spain and convince him that he could make this discovery in the name of Spain. King Charles gave him five ships and provisions so that this could be done. Magellans trip started out successfully and he did indeed find the strait in South America for which he was looking.
