works of Immanuel Kant. Before delving into Kants work, it pays to look at the Middle Ages and how it affected thought in general. First, it should be noted
that there was no one particular influence. Coleman (2000) remarks that "the Middle Ages, political thought is a rather messy and unstable category" (p.12). Also, according to Southern (1990), while
it was not perhaps as concrete as one would like, it was important. He writes: "This unity was by no means complete, but in the expansive period of the Middle
Ages, it was the most effective single force in western society" (Southern, 1990, p. 39). As time unfolded, people from the Middle Ages began to look at things with more
reason. Science would emerge and bring people out of the dark ages, and Immanuel Kant-one of many philosophers, would appear at a time when new thought was on the horizon.
Indeed, in every time period there are philosophers, but at this juncture it seems that philosophy was at the forefront. People really thought about things and there was a new
intellect on the rise. Kant would delve into new subject matter. He pursued transcendence he saw it as knowledge beyond the scope of human understanding. He saw the concept as
being equated with something that exceeds any individual persons comprehension. Transcendence then exceeds all human capacity. This concept is not foreign to the religious sort who sees God as omnipotent
and omniscient, certainly exceeding what a human being can understand. God knows all and many can accept that concept. Yet, it is hard to actually understand it. It is beyond
human capability to fully appreciate the concept. Another example is infinity. How can one acknowledge that there is no ending or beginning? There are many others. People just have to
