by the mass media" (p. 148). That fact, along with both electronic and print media, have been both praised and vilified. On one hand, "the media" is thought of as
the link to the development of the "global village" and the key to understanding other people in other cultures. On the other hand, it has been blamed for the
violence in American society and said to have damaged moral behavior and reasoning, while leading to the overall decline of literacy. And yet, it must also be understood that the
media is as powerful a presence in modern life as any government agency, political reality, or social structure. As such, the student working on this project should understand that it
has evolved as a governing entity in the daily lives of countless individuals. The student should make a concerted effort to consider specific examples relevant to their own point of
view. For example, are their political views more closely aligned with those presented by National Public Radio or the stations carrying the Rush Limbaugh commentaries? How do the politics of
their state influence the television coverage of certain issues compared to how they would be covered in another state. To coin a phrase, "one persons scandal is another persons personal
life decision." A Powerful Influence Regardless of how it is perceived, there can be no doubt that the media has had a tremendous influence in
