Socrates, also a great philosopher at the time, did not do any of his own writing. Solomon & Higgins write: "Plato first recorded, then elaborated, then embellished and transformed
Socrates many conversations...If it were not for Plato, of course, Socrates would be little but a footnote in the archives of Greek history" (p.36). Socrates certainly had an influence
on Plato. Yet, it is not as if Aristotle agreed with everything that Socrates said. This is perhaps why Socrates appears as a character in some of Platos works. Plato
and Socrates each take different approaches as it respects the seeking of wisdom. For Plato, philosophy starts with wonder and looks for understanding (Kass, 2003). Yet, Socrates sees the search
for wisdom as being aligned with humility (Kass, 2003). For Socrates, humility would come before mystery (Kass, 2003). Here, it seems that for Plato, there is a relentless search for
the truth, whereas for Socrates, one must place reverence over that search. Socrates does however participate in the piece that has come to be known as the cave allegory. In
the allegory, humans are born and live in a cave, but they are chained and shackled. They can see light only in the distance. In some way one can compare
this to how humans contemplate form. It is not easy. If one stretches the allegory and sees it as symbolic of humans only having a slight knowledge of reality, one
can take Platos form theory a step further. The allegory has been used to express many ideas but the gist of the concept is that man is limited in terms
of what he can see. People are essentially living in the dark much of the time. People are born in ignorance but the body of knowledge that exists is there
