opportunities, and it may be argued that as long as this building was striking, that whoever won the design would become well known, but that this would not necessarily exert
an influence on wider architecture in the country. In the case of Utzon, with his early departure form Australia is may be argued that despite the potential for influence very
little was actually exerted, but this is an influence that may be ongoing rather than one which has never existed. The
Sydney Opera House building has been both praised and criticised. The building, which began construction in 1959 was nit completed until many years later in 1973. During this time there
were many disagreements between Utzon and the Australian officials (Fromonot, 2002). This alone may have become a negative association with the design for architects due to his departure form the
project in 1966 (Murray, 2003). However, the design itself may be seen as being an influence. The design may also be seen as dated, as indicated by Robin who states
that "The free joyful, light, elegant and unbuildable concept of the fifties became a static, mechanical, heavy and clumsy product of the seventies" and that the role was symbolic. The
aspect of symbolism cannot be escape, due to the image that the opera house now occupies, but if the later comments are correct and it has become a mechanical and
clumsy building of the 1970s it would be unlikely to find any real influence with a design that incorporates billowing concrete sails to incorporate the building in the harbour where
