shows seem to have the most impact. Discussion Well begin with some observations of televisions impact in general. In her classic book The Plug-In Drug, Marie Winn makes an observation
that is fundamental to understanding the power of this medium, but which often goes unnoticed. We get so wrapped up in watching Star Trek, or the latest reality series, or
cop shows, or the news that we forget: "one is always watching television when one is watching television rather than having any other experience" (Winn, 1977, p. 3). We may
feel angry, or upset, or frightened or exhilarated, but in actual fact we havent done anything-weve simply been sitting watching other people do things. The illusion of real interaction that
TV provides makes it very seductive and powerful. There is a physiological reaction to television watching that occurs no matter what the content of the program is (Winn, 1977). The
"eyes, ears and brain respond to the stimuli emanating from the television screen regardless of the cognitive content of the programs" (Winn, 1977, p. 4). Watching TV is a "one-way
transaction" that requires humans to take in the material being broadcast in a "particular way, no matter what the material might be" (Winn, 1977, p. 4). For children in particular,
there is no activity that permits as much intake "while demanding so little outflow" (Winn, 1977, p. 4). This is true of everyone who watches TV: we sit and let
it wash over us but are required to do little or nothing in return. The impact of television is arguably greater on children than it is on adults, because children
