and while that is true, one has to understand the controversial nature of Socrates at the time. Today, he is a respected philosopher, but when he lived, Socrates was a
controversial character and thought to be a bad influence on the youth of Athens. His role in society is thought to be rather significant in politics and culture and his
ideas permeate modern life. One can take things a step further and suggest that Socrates has influenced the discipline of philosophy so much that it has immeasurably been altered. Who
was Socrates and why was he so influential? Socrates was a Greek philosopher who was born in Athens ("Socrates," 2003). His influence on the planet is well known. He is
infamous. Plato claims that Socrates had devoted his last thirty years to changing the ideas of the Athenians in respect to moral matters (2003). Socrates probably held doctrines
that human excellence is a sort of knowledge and so, it is also thought that all wrong doing is based on ignorance (2003). He believed that no one really desired
bad things and it is worse to do injustice than to suffer from injustice (2003). Socrates himself had been tried on charges of impiety and corruption of youth by
by those who wanted to restore democracy to Athens ("Socrates," 2003). While this philosopher had much faith in people and believed that immorality was a consequence of ignorance, many today
would say he was naive. At the same time, he would likely have some supporters; these would be the same people who fight for the lives of death row inmates,
and quite logically, if someone does something horrible, there must be some reason for it. Illegal activity is deviant behavior and so Socrates does have a point. Yet, this point
