to be a part of modern Korean culture. In fact, while the influence of certain old-fashioned practices is there, it has not impeded modernization. Rather, Buddhism and Shamanism seemed to
have enhanced it. Confucianism, while also a part of the culture and admittedly does contribute to the moral underpinnings of the society , has been used by government to manipulate
the people. Today, Confucianism as a predominant religion is representative of only a fraction of the Korean population. Freedom of religion is
guaranteed by the Constitution in South Korea and the people embrace some of the most ancient religions peculiar to their culture such as Shamanism, Buddhism and Confucianism ("Korean," 1991). All
these played an important part in the nations early cultural development as well as to have greatly influenced thought and behavior, despite the fact that Christianity has in recent times
spread rapidly to claim a large following (1991). The numbers of people who prefer each religion is telling. According to a
1985 national census, 41.4 % ("Korean," 1991,p. PG) of Koreans follow a particular religious faith and Buddhists number 8,060,000 or 46.8 % (1991, p.PG)of those who do follow a religion.
Protestants make up 37.7 % (1991, p.PG)and Catholics comprise 10.8 %. (1991, p.PG). Confucianists involve only 2.8 % (1991, p.PG).
