Jan Mostaert as examples of Medieval Christian painting. Mostaert was a Dutchman who often painted Christ or other religious subjects. The painting under discussion here is "Christ Shown to the
People," painted between 1510-1516. The painting is oil on wood, done in blacks, whites and grays, and is thought to be part of a diptych (Christ shown to the people,
1982). The painting focuses on the moment when Pilate shows Christ to the crowd and seeks their judgment (Christ shown to the people, 1982). The painting is now in the
Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The second painting is the "Adoration of the Magi," a familiar theme in religious painting. Mostaerts version is richly colored; Mary here wears
a bright red robe as does a man who might be Joseph, who is in the background (Adoration of the Magi). The two wise men who are seated on either
side of her are in dark browns, so that she and the baby on her lap stand out distinctly. The painting is oil on panel and is now in the
