we admit that the Greeks were also influenced greatly by other cultures, much of the influence in Western civilization can be related to the Greeks and the fact that they
were prominent in history and thus passed the influences along. The following paper examines Greek civilization and where and how it has influenced the development of Western civilization. Greek
Civilization and Influence Some of the areas in which the Greek civilization is noted as having influenced the rest of the world is in the subject of the arts, sciences,
politics, philosophy and lifestyle. In terms of lifestyle we can see that the ancient Greeks were a very powerful patriarchal people. Men ruled and women ran the house. Men were
the power and this is clearly seen throughout the history of Western civilization. Even today the barriers of a patriarchal society are still felt quite powerfully. In ancient Greek civilization
we also note that men generally had positions, jobs, that they would attend to every day. In essence they worked outside of the home in many cases and thus seemed
to set the standard for the future of employment. The other areas of influence are more predominantly those that involve the arts, sciences, politics and philosophy. In relationship to
the sciences we note that many civilizations prior to the Greeks had their own form of science but most of that science was based on things like beliefs and mythology.
The Greeks used mathematics. AS one author notes, "Greek science had its beginnings with mathematics. They were begun in Mesopotamia and Egypt, and then over the course of time were
