character, and also in the choices the main character ultimately makes. In many ways it is very much a story about the relationship between father and son, although most may
well only see the relationship between the main character, Amir, and his guilt and obligation to his long lost friend Hassan. The following paper examines the influence of family in
this novel. The Influence of Family in The Kite Runner In the first part of this story the reader becomes aware of the fact that Amir is constantly
seeking the approval of his father and that his father, Baba, perhaps sees Amir as a boy who needs to be more of a man, like himself. This is the
perspective of a child who wants his fathers approval and does not have it. AS one author notes, "Amir wants something from his father -- unconditional love" (Johnson). In fact,
he feels that Baba likes, or even loves and admires, Hassan more than he does Amir which is something that Amir does not like. As the Amir notes, "That was
how I escaped my fathers aloofness, in my dead mothers books. That and Hassan, of course" which indicates that he lost himself, in running from his fathers lack of interest,
in his friendship as well as literature (Hosseini 25). Even though he knows, or feels, that his father likes Hassan more than
him, he still is innocent enough to still love Hassan and the friendship. But, then comes an event that changes things. Hassan is attacked and raped by some bullying boys
and Amir does nothing. Part of why he does nothing is fear but there is also an underlying element that speaks of how if Hassan is gone perhaps his father
