there were authors and poets prior to Poe who wrote what is commonly referred to as Gothic literature, it was Poe who seemed to take it to the next level,
so to speak, in relationship to psychologically dark horrors. The following paper examines the influence Poe had on other individuals as it relates to literature. The Influence of
Edgar Allen Poe Edgar Allen Poe was a writer, as mentioned, who is considered to be one of the most powerful and ominous
writers of his time, or of any time in American literature. One author indicates, for example, how "Poe was criticized in his own time for daring to examine a crime
with no apparent motive, and a murderer with no apparent remorse. For 150 years, these themes have continued to challenge readers who are attracted and repulsed by Poes creation" (The
Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allan Poe). In looking at who Poe influenced, and how he influenced them, one author notes how,
