that will enhance their job performance. However, as we get older we find change more difficult, and going back to the classroom represents change, sometimes a significant one. This paper discusses how a consultant who is aware of the way in which change influences adult learners can use that awareness to improve their training and performance. Discussion There are many reasons for people to begin a formal training program of some sort, but doing so can have unexpected results. One source says that "[M]ost adults who initially seek out formal learning to help them deal with external change do not realize that it is also likely to engender internal change. Similarly, they may not realize that seeking higher education or higher-level training is often an outgrowth of change that is already in progress" (Taylor, Marienau and Fiddler). They may find that when they begin such a program, they are suddenly thrust into a new role, one in which they are the center of attention, perhaps for the first time in years (Taylor, Marienau and Fiddler). When people find their status changed, they may become uncomfortable, and find they are changing their understanding of "aspects of their world and themselves" (Taylor, Marienau and Fiddler). When they change their understanding of themselves, "such changes become ... the framework for new beliefs and actions" (Taylor, Marienau and Fiddler). Clearly this is an important issue and one that has the power to cause extensive transformation; "when learners reflect on deeply held personal beliefs and assumptions, they embrace a transforming development challenge, pulling their self-reflection into an awareness of themselves in a wider world" (Taylor, Marienau and Fiddler).
