The disease known as Anthrax is caused by the highly infectious microorganism Bacillus anthracis. The bacteria Bacillus anthracis reproduces by forming endospores. Todar (2009) reports
that the bacteria is gram-positive, and approximately 1 to 1.2 micrometers wide and 3 to five micrometers long. Anthrax is concerning from a world health perspective because, if left
untreated, it can result in widespread epidemics and death. Fortunately, treatment and even prevention of the disease is possibly. Anthrax most
often affects warm blooded animals other than humans. It is most commonly found, as would be expected, in agricultural areas with large populations of domestic livestock (Southwest Farm Press,
2010). Herbivores, in particular sheep, goats, cattle, and swine are the more commonly infected species of animals (Southwest Farm Press, 2010).
Those countries with less effective public health programs are more at risk for anthrax outbreaks than are those with more advanced programs. The areas of
higher risk include Central and South America, Southern and Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa, the Caribbean and the Middle East (Center for Disease Control). Fortunately the bacteria is uncommon in
the United States but when it does occur it is typically in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and South Dakota (Southwest Farm Press, 2010). Humans are most often exposed to
