people think of when they hear the term occurred in Britain during the late 1700s; the second "began during the mid-nineteenth century" and was centered in Germany and the United
States (Kelly, 2006). It "was important for the inventions of spinning and weaving machines operated by water power which was eventually replaced by steam" (Kelly, 2006). With the introduction of
new manufacturing processes, American society and the American economy changed "into a modern urban-industrial state" (Kelly, 2006). In America, industrialization involved "three important developments": transportation was improved and expanded; "electricity
was effectively harnessed"; and "improvements were made to industrial processes" (Kelly, 2006). Such improvements resulted in increased production (Kelly, 2006). The breakthrough in transportation was the completion of the transcontinental
railroad in 1869; this was a "major force behind economic growth in the decades after the Civil War" (Faragher et al, 2000, p. 550). "The addition of three more major
liens (Southern Pacific, Northern Pacific, and the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe) in the early 1880s and the Great Northern a decade later completed the most extensive transportation network in
the world" (Faragher et al, 2000, p. 550). Raw materials and finished goods could now be shipped all over the country. The Cumberland Road was the first national road; "begun
in 1811," it "eventually became part of ... Interstate 40" (Kelly, 2006). Rivers were tamed and waterborne transportation was "made efficient through the creation of the first steamboat, the Clermont,
