the way people lived, and changed where people lived as well. One author notes, "The Industrial Revolution may be defined as the application of power-driven machinery to manufacturing. It had its beginning in remote times, and is still continuing in some places (Rempel). The following paper examines the Industrial Revolution. The Industrial Revolution While there were many different elements to the Industrial Revolution, such as agricultural revolution in relationship to new forms of growing crops, the most important and most influential aspect of the Industrial Revolution came with the invention and gradual use of many different types of machinery, new technological devices. This occurred around the end of the 17th century. "By the beginning of the eighteenth century in England, the use of machines in manufacturing was already widespread" (Rempel). Machines utilized, quite often, steam engines which were new and with the use of machinery industries developed quickly and productively in particular areas. For example, the production of pottery and the production of textiles was greatly increased through machinery. Processes that were previously done by hand, by an individual, such as throwing a pot or weaving a piece of cloth, could now be done by machine and the production level was far higher. As an example of some of these changes Rempel notes that "In 1784 a machine was patented which printed patterns on the surface of cotton or linen by means of rollers. In 1894 Northrup produced an automatic loom, and when the power loom became efficient, women replaced men as weavers, although there were still hand weavers in the paisley shawl trade as late as 1850." Such ability to produce reduced the amount of workers needed to make clothes. ...
