put into practical application are all topics that are debated by elected officials, social scientists, educators and, of course, parents. There are always an abundance of questions related to the
topics but, far too often, there is a remarkable shortage of answers. One of the most significant problems that has a direct impact on students because of its impact on
teachers is the fact that at all levels of the educational system, teachers have been facing increasing challenges and ever-decreasing rewards. Such "rewards" include the simple fact that teachers are
underpaid and over-stressed, as well as the less simple consideration that they are faced with school violence, over-crowded classrooms, lack of resources and materials, and the sense that the profession
they have chosen to commit their time and energy to is actually making very little impact in the lives of their students. It is a demoralizing situation that should cause
those who are not teachers to wonder how teachers put up with it all. It would appear obvious that teaching has become a less than desirable life choice as fewer
and fewer college students are making the commitment to becoming teachers. The result has been one in which there are too few teachers to meet the nations demands. If one
considers the issue from a relatively cynical point of view, what sane person would take on a low-paying job that promises day-after-day of frustration, expectations that cannot be met, and
