When looking at many of the factors that have influenced this development of increasing levels of online relationships the first stage is to define what is meant by an online relationship. A relationship, in this context, may be defined as "an emotional or other connection between people" (dictionary.com, 2011). This indicates the wide range of potential relationships, while the internet has been given a great deal of attention in terms of romantic and/or relationships, with these often seen in the media, it has also been the source of a large number of other types of social relationships, such as friendships and social support. Online we will assume to mean though the internet, so online relationships are those friendships and other relationships that are conducted Looking at why and how this has occurred there can be no doubt that the impact on the many social networking sites have had on the way connection are made and maintained. Sites such as Myspace, Facebook and now Twitter as well as other types of platform, such as online gaming where there is a high level of communication between players, for example; World of Warcraft (WoW) has been a significant phenomena, creating long term relationships between players as they form guilds and work together. Ellison (et al, 2007) notes that the phenomena can be seen not only in the creation of new friendships through new connections, but also in the maintenance of existing friendships which originated off-line.
