areas where a project has been put together to regenerate the area. When areas become run down there are a range of associated economic and social problems that are associated
with poverty such as increased crime rates (Haralambos and Holborn 344, Turok 4). The need to regenerate these areas is of importance to the entire local community. However, the question
is how this is and can be done to satisfy the local needs. Important players in this process are the business and voluntary sectors.
The role of the business and the voluntary sector have been invaluable when regenerating areas both economically and socially, as these are usually found to go hand
in hand with each other. The disadvantage of any regeneration project is the cost, whilst the need for regeneration is apparent in many areas the funds to achieve this are
more difficult to secure (Blitz 1). This has and is proving to be a continual problem, in recent times it as been announced that for the financial year 2005/6 government
funding will be cut by 12% for all regeneration projects coming under the New Ventures Fund umbrella (Macauley PG). This serves as a timely reminder that reliance on the government
is a dangerous strategy for regeneration due to the whims and changes in political priorities, especially in an election year. An addition issue that is creating criticism is the
way in which the government appear to be focusing the current regeneration polices. In February 2003 there was a new strategy to help build and regenerate areas under the sustainable
communities plan announced by John Prescott, however, the ?22 billion promised is to be focused on four areas in areas that are growing in the South East. The strategy for
