is provided by the American system of government. Unfortunately, not every American recognizes the incredible importance of taking advantage of that right. This is a shame given that
we currently have what so many other less fortunate individuals in the world so desperately desire. Democracies, after all, have become the preferred form of government in a diversity
of countries. Our political system is not a pure democracy of course. In a pure democracy every person eligible to vote must attend all the meetings where laws
were made. There are no terms which expire therefore one must attend these meetings for life. Not surprisingly, pure democracies are short lived. Our political system is a
democracy that has been customized to be resilient enough to deal with the many stressors presented by the need for national governance. That is what gives it is strength.
Without our vote, however, that strength is never adequately utilized. As Habermas (22) warns, a liberal approach to the democratic process presents
the risk of "bundling together and pushing private interests against a government apparatus specializing in the administrative employment of political power for collective goals". Obviously, it is wise to
guard against special interest groups who pursue their own wants and desires at the expense of the people as a whole. This fact alone reiterates just how important it
is for every American to vote. At the same time, of course, all democracies must guard against government and its officials accruing so much power that the welfare of
