By far the most meaningful activity of my life has been my work with the mentally ill and disabled members of my community. These people are important to
me both because of the degree of their need and because of the strength and inner fortitude that they exemplify. The mentally ill and physically handicapped members of our
communities are deserved of much more than they have received in terms of community support. All of us must take responsibility for providing the leg-up that these people need.
Currently it is estimated that American volunteers donate more than twenty billion hours, $2 billion worth, in volunteer time per year
(Machi, 2000). Volunteer labor fuels many aspects of American life. Volunteers serve in hospitals, schools, nursing homes, spouse abuse centers and many other components of the community.
Every hour invested can make a tremendous difference in the lives of the mentally and physically handicapped members of our communities. Helen Keller once said:
"I am only one; but still am one. I cannot do everything, but I still can do something. I
will not refuse to do the something I can do". Some people have the tendency
to underestimate the importance their involvement might have in changing the lives of the mentally and physically handicapped. Others, however, recognize that they can indeed make a difference.
