The student considering the importance of using good English is immediately overwhelmed with memories of a myriad of situations in which their own use of English determined the outcome of their interactions with others. These outcomes can be either largely inconsequential or of tremendous importance. The socially aware student realizes that one of the most important determinants of success both in their academic experiences and in their professional lives once they have graduated is the skill with which they use the English language. While a number of ethnic groups face the cultural barrier of substandard English one of the most interesting is the African American. African Americans are born in this country yet often the level at which they communicate with individuals from the mainstream population is insufficient. The author has observed many instances when the lack of communication between African Americans and the mainstream population has hindered them to one degree or another. Indeed, the author herself has admittedly passed judgment on African Americans because of the way they sometimes chose to use the English language. Even in everyday encounters African Americans often demean themselves in the choices they make in regard to their communication style. The author realizes, of course, that there are many cultural reasons some blacks use English inappropriately yet this realization does not always deter either the author or others from passing negative judgment on African Americans. We do so even though we realize that African Americans, like many races and ethnicities which differ from the dominant cultural group in the U.S., tend to live and socialize in communities and groups which are defined primarily by their ethnic and racial ...
