much was made of the fact that she and her husband belonged to unions. After all, unionism is something stereotyped as being equated with low-level workers and the democrat party.
To see Republicans embracing unionism is something desirable by much of the public. First, what is a union exactly? Why is it so popular? How does labor relations impact organizations?
A labor union is " an organization of wage earners formed for the purpose of serving the members interests with respect to wages and working conditions" ("Labor Union," 2008). Unions
are helpful to those who work menial jobs and will not get raises or benefits without joining a larger force, but unions are also important for those in high-level professions.
Medical personnel join unions as do teachers and police officers. While unions do exist for people in low-level jobs, it is an unfair characterization to say that only blue-collar workers
make use of unions. Unions exist ideologically to serve the workers. Generally, labor relations impact organizations because the cost of labor is relevant in the scheme of things. In
Capital, Marx (1999) writes regarding past labor that is embodied in labor power and the living labor it can perform. He writes about the daily cost of maintaining a labor
force, something that is necessary in order to keep the worker alive during the 24 hours of each day. This of course does not in any way prevent the employee
