First, it should be noted that throughout the letter there are many references to time and how it can be used effectively. King (1963) begins by saying that his actions have been thought to be untimely. That was a criticism made against King because of his unpopular activities. But he replies in this letter to such accusations and says the following: "Knowing that a strong economic...with-drawal program would be the by-product of direct action, we felt that this would be the best time to bring pressure to bear on the merchants for the needed change" (King, 1963). It becomes clear that Kings actions are tied to a very specific plan geared to action at the right time, and not just at any time. Timing is everything is a saying that can be take to heart. In fact, when choosing to create social change, activists often wait for the right time and place for a confrontation. Often, an anniversary of someones death or an incident prompts social activity, suggesting that it is a good time to act. For example, on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade there are political protests on both sides. The activism is timely. Parading near the White House lawn on an abortion issue shortly after 9/11 would have been poor timing. When some tragedy occurs, it is not good to use it for social change, unless it furthers the cause. In the example given, 9/11 was a major event and few in the mainstream were wresting with the abortion rights issue at the moment.
