long ago, President George Bush showed off his language speaking ability by giving a speech in Spanish. This coincides with his politics which are decidedly friendly to immigrants, something
that goes against much of the thinking on the right that would see immigration as troublesome. But the Spanish-speaking George W. Bush has certainly courted the Hispanic vote with knowing
nods to the parochial interests of important segments of that population (Sangillo, 2002). As president, Bush had forged a significant relationship with Mexican President Vicente Fox and since September 11th,
has demonstrated a desire to ease immigration restrictions for Mexicans (2002). The Bush administration has further promised to end the Navys much criticized weapons testing that would take place on
the Puerto Rican island of Vieques (2002). One can see that while it is really the presidents policies that are important, the fact that he speaks the language of
the people he is addressing also becomes significant. If it were not, he would have just made the speech in English. Many have criticized the president, as well as
other politicians, when they use foreign language, contending that they are playing up to certain groups and that this just is not right. There is in fact a heated debate
between those who think that the United States is losing its culture by becoming bilingual and they fight to make English the official language. Then, there is the other side
of the coin. Some believe that English is a tool of globalization and linguistic imperialism and that not only is English not the best language to use all the time,
it is not acceptable to flaunt it. By not allowing other languages in, English speaking people can claim superiority. Hence, the debate goes to more than language but treads
