an individual back from happiness and success. On the other hand, the status may be able to help one succeed. This is true even if one pays a heavy personal
price for that success. Indeed, many individuals from poor neighborhoods use the anger and sense of unfairness as something that propels them to try to succeed in a world that
has already troubled them. Although people have succeeded, some ask at what price does that success come? O.J. Simpson has been ostracized. Once a successful football player, Simpson was
tried for a double homicide and while he was found not guilty, the public believes that he is guilty. This is in part due to the fact that he is
African American and he was raised in a neighborhood that was not wealthy. Other success stories yield similar anecdotes. While individuals claim that it is possible to get out of
the neighborhood, they find that the same prejudices await them in the real world. A student writing on this topic, in developing a thesis statement, might want to draw on
such examples. This may serve as a lead in to the thesis statement: It appears that initial socioeconomic status can hold individuals back, even if those individuals are financially successful.
The idea that "you can take the girl out of Brooklyn but you cant take the Brooklyn out of the girl" is truly applicable in a variety of settings. Indeed,
one is raised a certain way and the nouveau rich are not nearly as sophisticated as someone who comes from old money. There is a sense that when one grows
up a certain way, they seem to be in that class for life. They can never acquire the attitudes and adopt the conventions of those who are used to wealth.
